INTERVIEW FEATURE: Heartwreck (Bonus Exclusive Mix)

Heartwreck Exclusive Interview and Mix

Heartwreck DJ ProducerHello Heartwreck! Could you please give our readers a brief introduction to yourself and what you do?

HEARTWRECK – Hi Filthy Philly. My name is Lauren Clayton. I’m a 25 year old hairstylist by day, dj/producer my night. My style ranges from rump bumpin to headboard thumpin. I love heavy subbass, poppy percussions, sultry vocals, cosmic melodies, a touch of grime and a bit of 90’s swag.

You currently reside in Salt Lake City, but you call yourself a “transplant”. Where are you from originally?

HEARTWRECK – Just a little south of Los Angeles. I Grew up skiing in SLC, couldn’t get enough!

What are the biggest differences between the bass music scenes in Utah and California?

HEARTWRECK – I think size. In LA there are way more people, so the audience, the level of production and the amount of money invested is all much larger. Salt Lake holds it down though. We have beautiful places to throw festivals and amazing local talent.

How many cities have you performed in to date?

HEARTWRECK – Only a handful, BUT!.. I have just obtained flight benefits, so I have a feeling I will be traveling a bit more often now!

What sparked your interest in DJ’ing, and how long have you been mixing?

HEARTWRECK – It all started with making little mixtapes for friends, literally, two fingers play and record on the cassette player. The 90′s baby! Id even make ridiculous intros on the tape… Not much has changed! I have always loved the idea of blending the perfect collection of tunes and gifting them as an experience, straight from the heart. As for my more recent “dj interest” aka my obsession, it’s fueled by my love for music and the community it brings together.

I bought my first controller as a birthday present to myself in June 2011, so about a year and a half.

Heartwreck Electronic Music

Who are you favorite guilty-pleasure artists to listen to in music?

HEARTWRECK – As for recent artists Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lemar, Trey Songz, Asap Rocky, 2 Chainz, and Drake. I can never get enough Dr. Dre, Snoop, and Biggie.

What got you interested in producing?

HEARTWRECK – Producing seemed like taking a piece of me, all the beats in my heart, and putting them on paper. At the time I was heartbroken and decided I needed to channel my chaos of emotions into something beautiful. I started taking classes on production weekly, picking producers brains, and making tons of internet friends!

Which DAW do you use to produce, and why?

HEARTWRECK – Ableton! I love that I can use one program to play live in and produce with.

Explain how your music is inspired by your heart frequencies.

HEARTWRECK – I pretty much turn my heart waves into sound waves.

Who would you consider to be your greatest influences as a producer?

HEARTWRECK – Kastle, Sweater Beats, Sinjin Hawke, Djemba Djemba, Lunice, Cedaa, Beaches, Disclosure, Falcons.

Heartwreck Live Bass MusicDo you play video games? If so, what are your favorite system and games to play?

HEARTWRECK – YES! I have a nintendo 64, a Gamecube, Wii and Nintendo DS. I’ll school you on Mario cart and Super Smash Brothers. This is where my love of 8bit noise’s comes from, I think. Besides that, I’m an arcade kind of gal, Bubble Shooter, Ms. Pacman and Asteroids!! FTW!

Which dance music labels would you most like to be signed to, and why?

HEARTWRECK – Pelican Fly. Dj Slow, Sinjin Hawke and Cashmere Cat are pioneering such amazing sounds right now! I can’t get enough. Such a good groove both dreamy and danceable. I’m also vibing on what the 710 ЯE₵ORƉS crew is doing. They took the best parts of that west coast bass music style and added all sorts of turnt, futuristic flavor.

Which of your original tracks are you most proud of to date?

HEARTWRECK – GAH! That’s a toughie!!! I think Overnight Relationships. I pushed myself super hard on this one. The majority of it was written on an airplane. My heart was crushed, per usual, a risqué, lustful track unfolded. I think a lot of peeps can relate to it. And, lets be for real, the 90’s Amber vocal is BOSS! Heartwreck CERTIFIED!

What do you and your friends do for fun in Salt Lake City, Utah?

HEARTWRECK – Well my sister wives and I like to hit up the local Mormon ward on Sundays. The rest of the week we can be found getting debaucherous, dressing up like unicorns, starting hyphy dance parties, holding each others hair back.. umm WE HAVE FUN!

Which gig has been your favorite to play so far, and why?

HEARTWRECK – I recently had the opportunity to open for the aussie sister duo Nervo, at the Sundance Film Festival. It is a beautiful rarity to have a female dj/producer on the stage, in this case two! I have loved what these sassy females have been doing for so long. I literally had to slap myself and be like fer real, this is my life!?!? One of those ah ha moments for sure! Not to mention, big sound, bright lights, that’s that shit I do like!

Which music festivals would you most like to headline in your career?

HEARTWRECK – Envision, Shambhala, Electric Forest and Sonic Bloom come to mind right now.

Which three artists would you most like to collaborate with in music, and why?

HEARTWRECK – Any female producers and/or vocalists, lets make sexy shit!

Do you plan what sound or genre you are attempting to produce before creating a track, or do you let your sound create itself as you produce?

HEARTWRECK – I always pick a bpm. a key, a vocal, and a few percussions. Then I roll a fatty, and RUN with it! I’m a super in the moment person, so everything just develops impulsively. Inspiration, on the other hand, comes to me all the time. The task list in my phone is beefy! Now if I could just have an extra five hours a day!!

Are there any upcoming projects we should keep an eye out for from you?

HEARTWRECK – Working on a remix for a homie currently! With valentines coming up, gig’s gig’s gig’s!

Make your shout-outs Heartwreck!

HEARTWRECK – AW shit! Shoutie to all the ladies holding it down in the EDM scene. There are not enough of us! Mad love to my crews in the 801, doing it large, V2 Productions and The Hive Collective. Holla to all my internet friends who let me pick their brains! All the lovelies that stack my dropbox proper. AND of course all of you who follow my soundcloud, comment my tracks, and support my shows. Seriously, YOU make my day time and time again! A personal shoutie to my main bitch Jilly, she supports all my local shows, drinks my bar tabs in gin, and makes sure I have all my cords. YOU YOU, Mr. Bim, you’re a boss, thanks for hosting me!
